I have recently found myself infatuated with films of the silent era. I love how everything about them is so literal. The acting, the use of scenery, and props. These movies capture complex ideas through simple yet over-dramatized actions. For my thesis, I wanted to use this method of storytelling in an attempt to demonstrate, in a very literal way, an idea I find myself constantly wondering about—the nature of truly knowing people. I often find myself staring at the faces of friends and loved ones, completely blown away by the idea that no matter how much time I spend with this one person, I will never truly know everything about them. What if there’s something evil hidden in the depths of their hearts that will never see the light of day? Through a short film that acts as an ode to the era of silent film, I want to attempt to explore this idea in a true 1920s sense, and that is turning the metaphysical into the physical and discovering what would happen if one woman discovers the truth about the man she is with.
